Guyana and Suriname Experience

Day 1

Arrive Georgetown

You will be met when you arrive at the airport and driven to your hotel. Georgetown is served by two international airports; the main airport, Cheddi Jagan (airline code GEO) is 25 miles south of the city; Ogle airport (OGL) is 4 miles to the east.

Days 2-3

North Rupunimi

Fly from Georgetown to North Rupunimi, a region of wetlands and savannah, river and forest and home to the Makushi people. Explore the forest, oxbow lakes and Rupunimi river. There are ponds with giant water lilies (Victoria Amazonica). Lake Amuku is said to be the location of the legendary Lake Parime where the golden city of El Dorado stood. Accommodation in a local lodge.

Days 4-5

Travel to Surama and transfer to a local lodge, your base for two nights. In addition to visiting Amerindian communities there are trails to follow into the forest and for birdwatching. We recommend a dawn hike across the savannah to climb Surama mountain and a trip through the rainforest for a canoe trip on the Burro Burro River to spot giant river otters, spider monkeys and tapirs.

Day 6

Iwokrama Reserve

Transfer to Iwokrama. The Iwokrama Forest Reserve is a conservation area of 360,000 hectares of primary rainforest established by Guyana and the Commonwealth.

The Iwokrama Canopy Walkway has a series of suspension bridges and platforms. It is 154m in length and 33m off the ground, ideal for spotting birdlife and monkeys in the treetops.

Overnight at a local lodge.

Day 7

Pakaraima Mountains

Drive by 4-wheel vehicle along one of the best trails for sightings of jaguar, where the savannah meets the foothills of the Pakaraima Mountains in North Rupununi.

Howler monkeys can be heard in the early morning and you may be able to see hummingbirds at your lodge.
Overnight accommodation.

Day 8

North Rupununi - Georgetown

Take a dawn hike in the foothills of the Pakaraima Mountains with rewarding views across the savannah before flying back to Georgetown.

Arrival transfer to your hotel. Afternoon city tour included.

Day 9

Kaieteur Falls

Day trip to the Kaieteur Falls, the world’s greatest single-drop waterfall. It is a 45 minute flight from Georgetown to reach the airstrip for the Kaieteur Falls and a 15 minute walk.

Return to Georgetown and overnight at your hotel.

Days 10-11

Fly from Georgetown to Paramaribo and transfer to your hotel on arrival. Paramaribo airport is 30 miles south of the city.

As well as being able to explore the UNESCO heart of Paramaribo in your own time, we arrange an excursion to Commewijne in Nieuw Amsterdam (on the right bank of the Suriname River) to learn about colonial sugar plantations.

Days 12-13

Maroon Villages

Travel by road and motorised dugout canoe into the Upper Suriname River area with Maroon villages and untouched Amazon Rainforest. The Maroons are descended from African slaves who escaped the coastal sugar plantations and who settled in the interior to form independent societies and states within the rainforest.

In addition to visiting Maroon communities to learn about their traditions and way of life, there are opportunities for birdwatching, jungle treks, alligator spotting, boat excursions and navigating rapids.

Accommodation at a local lodge.

Day 14

Return to Paramaribo and transfer to your hotel. Free time to explore at leisure.

Day 15

Depart Suriname

Departure transfer to the airport in time to check in for your international flight home.
